What is a Search Engine? |
| |
Search engine is a program that searches its database for specified
keywords and returns a list of the links to the documents where
the keywords were found. Search engines contain huge databases
of web page files that have been assembled automatically by machine.
|
| |
How a Search Engine works? |
| |
Search engines compile their databases by employing "spiders"
or "robots" ("bots") to crawl through web
space from link to link, identifying and perusing pages. Sites
with no links to other pages may be missed by spiders altogether.
An option is thus provided to submit a new link for crawling.
Once the spiders get to a web site, they typically index most
of the words on the publicly available pages at the site. |
| |
How to get listed in Search Engines? |
| |
Usually spiders jump from link to link to find sites. But
manually submitting your site to a database provided by the
search engines which is meant for crawling in future ( Submissions)
can fill this gap.
|
| |
So how important it is for my sites to be getting listed
in a Search Engine? |
| |
Most of the surfers on the web depend on major search engines
(As well as Directories) for their required information. So for
any web site willing to reach masses it is very very important
to get listed in as many as possible search engines and directories. One
of the major draw back of search engines in general is the size
of the huge database. So even if your site gets listed it may
get listed in 127th page of the result page. So you almost get
no visitors through search engines.

What is Search Engine Optimization? |
| |
A web page is considered search engine friendly or optimized
for search engines when it is properly read and ranked well
by the search engine ROBOTS. So in next few chapters we will
discuss in length the practices to be incorporated to make your
web site search engine friendly.
